The Alto Golf Course

The Alto golf course was designed by the late Sir Henry Cotton and was inaugurated in 1991. The 18-hole Par-72 course wends its way between residential villa gardens and small apartment blocks whilst the fairways provide some attractive sea views. Sir Henry Cotton was the British Open Champion in 1934, 1937 and 1948, who decided in the early 1960s to move his home from England permanently to the Algarve. The Alto Golf Club Golf Course was his ultimate golf course design and its construction started just before the famous master golfer died in December of 1987.

The course is considered a good test on the ability of a player with strategic bunkers, dog-legs, elevated greens and well placed trees. A simple Par-3 opens the round but it is deceives the golfer to what lies in store. The winding fairways and elevated greens reflect the philosophy of Sir Henry on playing golf by providing low handicap players with a testing game yet still affording plenty of enjoyment for players at the club level whilst providing inspiration for high handicappers. The back nine is set on rolling slopes and includes the remarkable Henry Cotton Challenge of one of the longest Par-5 in Europe.
